We’ve currently got tunes up for Oktober – a local guitar duo which includes our very own Danny Prendergast. They play wonderful guitar music, combining to create lush voicings with sensitive melodic lines.

We also have a couple of Lightbox tunes up – a local pop band with big aspirations. Both the bass player and lead guitarist work with us, and when they’re not with us this is what they do!

Stay tuned for gig dates and more local artists with their wares!

You heard what the man said. We currently have a lovely USED Gibson Les Paul Custom up for sale. It comes in black livery and plays wonderfully. The frets have the lovely Gibson ‘square’ type profile, and fretting notes is near-effortless.

The previous owner has replaced the original pickup surrounds and scratch plate with authentic Gibson parts in cream, which in my view gives the guitar an air of the APPEARANCE of a Standard Model. The original units are in good shape though, and are included in the fantastic Gibson ‘Custom’ hard case, so if you’d prefer the aesthetics a little different you’ve got the option.

This instrument is not currently advertised on our web-store, but please have a look at the images below, and call our Aylesbury Store on +44 (0) 1296 392225 for more information.

Fender’s position in the musical instrument marketplace is unquestionably spectacular. There must be very few guitarists in the world who haven’t either owned, played or wanted a Fender guitar/bass, and you’ll probably see them at most concerts or gigs in the pop/rock/blues/funk/reggae etc etc idioms.

The American-made products Fender makes, most notably the American Standard or American Series instruments, have long been industry standards – with exceptional build quality, wonderful playability and versatility they stand the test of time as they’re always in demand whether used or new. In an American Fender guitar or bass you will find a very sturdy and trusty musical friend that you can make uniquely yours.

And so to the core part of this article. To cut to the chase WE HAVE USED AMERICAN STRATS IN STOCK. IN STOCK. These things don’t tend to hang around long either so definitely come down and play them, or give us a call. We’ve got a couple of American Standard Strats and a Hot Rod too! Check out the photos below of two of them.

The first one is an 80′s Strat which has had a face lift with a black scratchplate. The maple neck has aged nicely, tinting over the years, and it feels very solid in the hand. Overall this guitar oozes David Gilmour – and to the untrained eye could be a New-old-stock type guitar build in the David Gilmour mould! This guitar doesn’t come with a hard case, but is some tasty guitar for under £500.

The second is our Hot Rod – in fetching Surf Green, the pearloid pickguard really pops out. Another maple neck adourns this guitar with pickups that appear to be Texas Specials! Mmmmm.

As I alluded to before, these guitars will hold their value, so not only will you own a fantastic musical instrument, but it will also be a stable asset, which will reasonably command the same money you pay today for many years to come.

Guitar strings are funny things. There are many brands, materials, gauges, types of wrap, coatings, and many different reasons why you may prefer one set to another. Sure, your favourite musician may have his or her name on the packaging, but are they really right for you and your instrument?

From personal experience getting strings right is important, and makes a massive difference from guitar to guitar particularly in how they feel and respond to how you play. I may use one set for one guitar, but wouldn’t dream of using that same set on another guitar.

A big thing for me is longevity, or the life of the string. I recently strung my Ibanez RG3120 with a set of Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings and they seem to have become ‘chalky’ and tired over the past week or so. They did ‘feel’ good for the first couple of weeks though…

And I recently reverted back to Gibson strings on my ES175…the D’Addario EXL 11′s I put on there just didn’t feel right – they faded quickly and didn’t bring out the character of the guitar as well.

My quest for my perfect acoustic guitar string was also interesting. I tried a number of different types of Phosphor-Bronze strings, as well as a number of different ‘coated’ strings. Eventually I settled on the Elixir Nanoweb string – enough coating for sustained longevity and tone, but thin enough to allow the true character of the string to ring through.

Gauge is another issue altogether. There is a general feeling that thicker strings provide a better tone – of which I’m not convinced – but after watching Stevie Ray Vaughan play his ridiculously thick strings I noticed the amount of effort and energy he was putting into the movement of them. This was something I desired – I wanted to have to work a bit harder on my instrument to convey my message. I’ll concede that my move from 9′s to 10′s wasn’t the giant leap it could’ve been to SRV’s 13′s (I think), but it was sufficient for me to have to alter my approach slightly, and also struggle for a short time, to play as fluently as I had done previously. The difference in feel was great. I felt I could play faster, and more importantly, more expressively. From playing electrics with 9′s and 11′s I have decided that 10′s are a happy medium for my average blues/rock/funk session. The process was a very happy one, and I recommend it to anyone.

That is of course, all my own opinion. And what I’ve learnt from dealing with an even broader range of strings than those already mentioned, is that some musicians will have their favorite strings for particular situations, and others won’t really know why they use the strings they do.

To conclude I recommend two things to both types of musician – try out other string types to see what else is out there – even if you go back to the string with which you started, at least you’ll know why you like it. And change your strings as often as is practical as this will provide you with as pure a platform possible to express yourself.

A wide range of electric and acoustic guitar, bass, banjo, ukelele strings and many more is available through the amusic.co.uk online store. Stocked brands include Rotosound, D’Addario, Elixir, Fender, Martin, Ernie Ball, Gibson and others.

Since November 2008 I’ve been using the Fender Blues Junior as my ‘small’ amp. It’s a fantastic little thing that looks great, and sounds just as good.

It’s a 15watt all-valve combo with a single channel, that can deliver beautifully clear clean sounds, and wonderfully crunchy blues-rock drive. It utilises 2 EL84 valves in the power amp, a trio of 12AX7′s in the preamp, and you also get spring reverb at your disposal.

As I’m normally used to amps with atleast two channels, this has led me to think about how I approach playing with this amp. With the amp set to a driven sound I can clean the sound up by rolling the volume down on the guitar, and when the need arises, I can then increase the volume on the guitar for a bit of blues-y dirt!

This is a great amp to use as a foundation for a selection of pedals. There’s no effects loop, which may turn off those with bigger boards, but I like to keep things more simple with this amp, using overdrive, wah, delay and a handful of modulation effects, and these work well straight into the input. It must be said that simplicity is order the of the day here, but it does it’s job very well.

One of my favourite things about this amp is the FAT switch. In a nut shell this is a boost switch on the amp control surface, and is also switchable via a supplied footswitch. You’ll find no increase in gain when it’s in use, but there is more volume and the tone thickens up nicely. The boost is sufficient enough to be a practical solo lift mid-song, however you need to be aware of when you’ve used as there’s no indication on the amp or supplied footswitch whether you’ve actually got the boost on. It’s one of the few things I would really like on it that I feel it’s missing.

The Blues Junior weighs like a valve amp should, but the quality of the amp is such that it’s worth lugging it over distance. The volume that it kicks out further proves the worthiness of the junior – it’s fantastic! It can hold it’s own in rehearsals and pub gigs with no problems.

Overall I’m chuffed with this amp. It’s served me well in lots of different scenarios and really sounds great.
